Fontana, Calif. – Heavy rain may have delayed the first race of the 2010 Southern California Drag Racing Series (SCEDA) season, but it did not dampen the spirits of the hundreds of racers who will compete this weekend at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, Calif. in the unique bracket racing series.

Debuting this year is the exciting Calvert Racing Suspension Stock/Super Stock Combo. The class competed in a test race at the final event of 2009, was deemed to be a tremendous success and has come back for a full-pull in the SCEDA 2010 series. As a special incentive, the winner of the Calvert Racing Suspension Stock/Super Stock Combo at a SCEDA event, using Cal-Tracs Traction Bars and displaying a Calvert Racing decal on their car will be rewarded with an extra $100 bonus. Runner-up finishers who meet the same criteria will receive $50 for their efforts.

Back again for another season is the Meziere Enterprises Electronics bracket category, with the winner of each individual race to receive a $1000.00 pay-out based on car count. The winner each day in Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels No Electronics category receives $500.00 for their efforts also based on car count. Dick Krieger and Don Gatlin will be looking to defend their championships from the 2009 SCEDA series in these two very competitive categories. The kids competing the Terminator Blocks, Clutches & Accessories Junior Dragsters 32-car field will receive a savings bond for $300 win, $150 runner up and $75 for semi-final appearance each day.

The unique bonus structure to SCEDA racing returns for yet another year. Ron Miller of West Coast Supercops in Torrance, Calif. has put up $100 to the first SCEDA racer who cuts a perfect light during eliminations (does not include Juniors). On the flip side, Chris Lee from Cal Automotive in Phelan, Calif. will award to the first person that goes red in eliminations in Meziere Electronics or Mickey Thompson non-electronics $50 on both March 27th and 28th. Scot Paul will award to the best package in the 1st round of Junior Dragster a $50 savings bond. Best package is your reaction time plus amount over your dial in.

The two-day SCEDA event will occur March 27th and 28th at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana. Each day an individual race will occur, with winnings, “Big Guy” trophies and points awarded to all racers for entry for the season ending Race of Champions event.

CALVERT RACING PARTNERS WITH NEW SCEDA CATEGORY

Fontana, Calif. – The Southern California Drag Racing Series (SCEDA) is pleased to announce a marketing partnership with Calvert Racing Suspensions for the 2010 racing season. The SCEDA Series Stock – Super Stock Combo class will now be known as the Calvert Racing Suspension Stock – Super Stock Combo class effective at the series first event this year to be held at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, Calif., January 23rd and 24th.

SCEDA held an introductory running for Stock and Super Stock as one class at the series final event in 2009 to see if it would fit with their current bracket racing format. The turnout was overwhelming, as nearly double the expected entries showed up to Fontana. Due to the extreme interest, SCEDA decided to make the class a permanent addition in 2010. Calvert Racing Suspensions noticed the excitement this new category created and decided to become the title rights sponsor.

Calvert Racing provides drag racers unsurpassed quality craftsmanship and traction performance and has been doing so for over 15 years. Calvert racing is a leader in leaf spring innovation. Calvert Racing manufactures and distributes the world famous Cal-Tracs traction bars, Split-Mono Leaf spring kits, as well as Rancho RS 9000 Rear Shocks. Calvertracing.com also offers offer their own line of Front 90/10 Shocks.

“With the tremendous growth that we have experienced here at Calvert Racing and the amount of our customers that participate in drag racing it seemed like a perfect fit for us to participate in the SCEDA Series,” noted John Calvert. “We try to help all of our customers and be there for them so this is just another way that we at Calvert Racing can keep close to our customers.”

Calvert, himself a former NHRA World Champion in 1991, has a strong background in the NHRA sportsman categories. Calvert recently drove one of Brent Hajek’s A/Stock Cobra-Jet Mustangs to a number two qualifying effort and event victory at the 2009 NHRA Winternationals. The victory for Calvert was 41 years after the inaugural Cobra Jet debut in 1968.

The partnership between SCEDA and Calvert Racing also includes a bonus contingency program. For any competitor in the Calvert Racing Suspensions Stock-Super Stock category who wins a SCEDA event, using Cal-Tracs Traction Bars and displaying a Calvert Racing decal on their car will be rewarded with an extra $100.00 bonus. Runner up finishers who meet the same criteria will receive $50.00 for their efforts.

This new category is slotted to compete at eight SCEDA events in 2010. The dates are scheduled for January 23 and 24, March 27th and 28th, July 3rd and 4th and August 21st and 22nd.
Gatlin Captures SCEDA Meziere Enterprises Electronics Championship

Fontana, Calif. – Don Gatlin, “aka Dead-on-Don” a 20-year bracket racing veteran captured the coveted Southern California Drag Racing Association (SCEDA) Meziere Enterprises Electronics Series championship for the 2009 season. The SCEDA championship, which was the first in the career for Bakersfield, Calif. based Gatlin, was a highlight in what was a very successful annual campaign. In addition to winning the SCEDA Series and SCEDA events this year he also won the prestigious Medford bracket race earlier this season.

Gatlin began his racing career in 1989 at the wheel of an 11-second 1978 Camaro at Famosa Raceway in Bakersfield. He ran in the Pro E.T. class turning times in the 11.80 second zone, gaining invaluable experience racing against some of the best bracket racers in the country. He eventually upgraded his ride to the current seven-second, 170 mile per hour 1927 “T” Roadster he captured the SCEDA championship with. Gatlin has always bracket raced and has some experience in super class racing but when comparing the two he enjoys the bracket racing over super class racing as he thinks it is a lot more fun, provides a better purse structure and a lot more racing.

“I really like racing with SCEDA,” noted Gatlin. “It’s a fun series and we enjoy the way that the series in conducted.” His passion for racing includes the confidence that when he goes to the starting line he has a reliable car and with Meziere Enterprises equipment on his car. He never has to worry about starting or cooling and as a result is ready to compete at a winning level. “Meziere Enterprises is a great company run by a great family and I’d like to thank them for supporting this series.”

Gatlin would like to thank his crew, which includes his wife Dora and Greg Tremain. His future plans are to compete with two cars, both the Black roaster and a new dragster, which at the upcoming Thanksgiving Big Bucks Bracket Race held at “The Strip” at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, will be driven by multi-time sportsman world champion Anthony Bertozzi. He thinks that there is a time and place for both and would like to be able to enter and race them both.

For winning the series season championship, Gatlin and his family won an all accommodations paid trip and he is going to Hawaii. When asked when he planned to head to the islands his response was, “as soon as the schedule is out so I won’t miss any SCEDA Series or any other races that I want to attend.” He will also be forever remembered with a brick for his accomplishment at the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing in Ocala, Fla. on the Walk of Fame.

SCEDA started out back in the early 1970’s as the Southern California Econo Dragster Association. SCEDA was comprised of approximately 50 members who raced a variety of “Competition Eliminator” type vehicles such as front and rear engine dragsters, altereds, street roadsters and funny cars. SCEDA was the “economical” alternative to NHRA’s Competition Eliminator class, hence the term Econo was used in our name.

As SCEDA evolved into the Southern California Drag Racing Association, most of our members raced open wheeled dragsters. Today, our style of handicap E.T. racing follows most closely to the National Hot Rod Association’s Super Pro, Pro, and Junior Dragster classifications and is open to any vehicle running between 6.50 and 13.99 in “Meziere Electronics”, 7.50 to 21.99 in” Mickey Thompson Performance Tires and Wheelsl” No-E. Our “Terminator Blocks, Clutches, and Accessories” Junior Dragster program is designed to take the kids and turn them into championship drag racers at what ever level of competition they desire.

While the racing in SCEDA is quite intense and competitive, our ideals have always been to retain the family, spirit of friendship and mutual support.

Stock and Super Stock competitors in Southern Calif. do not have many local options to race against each other. The Southern California Drag Racing Association (SCEDA) will make it easier for them beginning October 17th and 18th at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, Calif., as they welcome a Stock/ Super Stock combo category into their successful family-based racing organization.

“We have been thinking about this plan for a while and it is time we gave these guys and gals a local racing option,” noted Brent Cannon, SCEDA director of sales, marketing and competition and a successful drag racer himself who has captured two-NHRA National event Wally’s in the Super Comp category. “Opening our organization to these dedicated racers will give them a friendly and affordable place to race and provide the fans with a more exciting show. There is nothing like wheels-up launches from these factory hot rods.”

The rules for this new class are quite unique and will provide fair competition to all racers. All participants must be NHRA legal for their classification. Racers who compete in the same class will not race heads-up as traditional NHRA Stock and Super Stock rules mandate. It will be a bracket race. Each car will receive two time trials (time and weather permitting) and qualifying ladders will be based off reaction-time and not performance.

“This is a test program for our series, so we wanted to try something different,” said Cannon. “We feel the reaction time qualifying provides some more excitement to this class, and the bracket race format for class competition gives the little guy a good shot at winning rounds. It’s not about cubic dollars at SCEDA. We just want everybody to have fun.”

As with every SCEDA event there are several other categories for nearly every type of drag car imaginable. From Junior Dragsters to six-second Top Dragsters, a SCEDA event is one the entire family can enjoy.
